The dirty world, the pure heart
Oliver Twist, one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens', is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century. The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London.
The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, who is an orphan, in a workhouse
his early life was went through. Later, Oliver got his first job that sent to the local coffin shop as an apprentice. but Oliver left there to Landon secretly because of the oppression of the owner’s wife .in the Landon, he met a thief who took him to their home, cheated to be thief. fortunately, he was taking Mr. Brown's house and live in there, he received Brown and his housekeeper, Mrs. Bidwin meticulous care, the first time he feels the warmth of the world. Thief Gang fear Oliver will reveal the secret groups, in charge of the instruction, Sykes and Nancy while out for the Oliver bend over backwards, Brownlow returned bookstall owner used the book back into the thief to his cave. When Mr. Brown known he was grandson who was looking for, with the help of Nancy, they rescue Oliver from the home of thieves successfully.
Nancy is a kind-hearted, courageous, witty, dare to love and hate woman. When Oliver by a gang of thieves in afflict by every means, Nancy stand up, with their own actions to protect the Oliver. when Fagin and Monks plot how to deal with the tortured Oliver, Nancy deliberately pretending to be drunk the wine, fell on the side of listening their secret seriously and find the opportunity to send out this message; Nancy was a person who think the love is more important than the future, reputation, and even her life. although his lover Sykes is ruthless, don't take her seriously, Nancy doesn`t matter how much pain and abuse she had to endure, even if she were dying, she wanted to be able to go back to Sykes. Later, to save Oliver, she chose betrayal, perhaps in her heart, there is still a little luck, I hope Sykes can see in their past feelings, give her a way out. But Sykes because of her betrayal, killed Nancy. as a key figure in the work, she is eager to return to the bright life, but she is trapped by reality. Nancy's ambivalence is one of the most important highlights of the novel. Such ambivalence is another reason for her character, and it is also an important reason why she can`t escape the tragic fate.
Oliver’s child is miserable and bumpy. But he had never changed himself in such an environment. He still was kind, filled with happiness for his life., He struggled with ugly people all the time. I was quietly pleased at that the kind Nancy and Mr. Brown in that era, even if I could feel angry about those ugly actions when reading it. I saw Nancy who live
in cruel world, however, struggled for being faithful to her lover.
How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I don't think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.
For me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a person. Goodness is to humans what water is to fish. He who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. On the contrary, as the famous saying goes, ‘The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose', he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person. People receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do good to both the people he has helped and himself.
After reading all the novel, I think we should do like this: if someone loves you, love them back unconditionally, not because they love you, but in some way, they are teaching you how to love, but if someone hurts you, forgive him, because he makes you to be careful when you open your heart to others n ext. time.
This is a really great book, you should read it.
