Once, there was a man named Valentine. He lived in Rome during the third century. At that time, an emperor named Claudius ruled Rome. Claudius wanted to have a big army. But many men did not want to fight in wars, because they did not want to leave their wives and children. This made Claudius furious, so he thought of a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Valentine certainly wasn’t going to support that law!
Valentine was a priest. One of his favorite activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, Valentine kept on
performing marriage ceremonies — secretly, of course. One night, he was caught. He was thrown in jail and told that his punishment was death.
Many young people came to the jail to visit him. They threw flowers and notes up to his window. One of these young people was the daughter of a jail guard. She helped him keep his spirits up. On the day Valentine was to
die, he left her a little note saying, “Love from your Valentine.” It is believed that that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine’s Day. It was written on the day Valentine died, February 14, 269 A.D. Now, every year on this day, people think about love and friendship. They know that love can’t be beaten!

Unlike most other holidays, the history of April Fools’ Day, sometimes called All Fools’ Day, is not totally clear. The only point in time that can be agreed on as the beginning of this tradition was 1582, in France. Before that year, the New Year was celebrated for eight days, beginning on March 25. The celebration reached the highest point on April 1. With the reform of the calendar under Charles IX, the Gregorian calendar (公历,阳历) was introduced, and New Year’s Day was moved to January 1.
However, because in those days communications were not as developed
as they are today, many people did not receive the news for several years. Some people refused to accept the new calendar and continued to celebrate the New Year on April 1. These backward people were considered “fools” by other people. They were often sent on “fools’ errands”(徒劳无益的工作) or were made the targets of jokes.
This developed, over time, into a tradition of playing a trick on someone on the first day of April. The tradition eventually spread to England and Scotland in the eighteenth century. It was later introduced to the American colonies of both the Britain and France. April Fools’ Day thus developed into an international fun feast, so to speak, with different nationalities specializing in their own kind of humor at the expense of their friends and families.
46. According to an earlier calendar, New Year’s Day in France was________.
A. March 25 B. January 1 C. April 1
D. April 3
47. Which of the following first had the tradition of celebrating the April Fools’ Day?
A. France.
B. England. C. Scotland. D. America.
48. What was people’s attitude towards the new calendar? A. They accepted it happily. B. They refused it immediately.
C. Some recognized it. D. Some laughed at it. 49. We can infer from the passage that ________. A. news traveled slowly at that time
B. Charles IX reformed the calendar C. April Fools’ Day is a fun feast D. the history of April Fools’ Day is not completely clear 50. The passage mainly tells us ________. A. what the French did on April Fools’ Day B. how April Fools’ Day came into being C. when was the new calendar introduced D. why some people were fooled in France

I hurried into the local department store to grab some last-minute Christmas gifts. Christmas was beginning to become such a drag (累赘). I had so much work to do. I wished that I could just sleep through Christmas. I mumbled (喃喃自语) to myself the prices of all these toys and wondered if the kids would even play with them.
Then I found a little boy of about 5 holding a lovely doll in the doll aisle. He kept touching her hair and he held her so gently. I just kept looking at the little boy and wondered whom the doll was for. So I walked up to the boy and asked him whom the doll was for. I told him that maybe Santa was
going to bring it. “No, Santa can’t go where my sister is ... I have to give the doll to Mamma to take to her.”I asked him where his sister was. He looked at me with the saddest eyes and said, “She has gone to be with Jesus. Daddy says that Mamma is going to be with my sister.”
My heart nearly stopped beating. I couldn’t help remembering a story I had seen in the newspaper several days earlier about a drunken driver hitting a car and killing a little girl and putting the mother in serious condition in the hospital. Surely this little boy belonged to that story. I decided to choose the Christmas gifts meticulously (精心地). This reminded me that I should cherish my family and show them my love.
51. From the first paragraph, we know that ________. A. the author was looking forward to Christmas
B. the author was choosing presents for the family patiently C. the author didn’t have extra energy to prepare for Christmas D. the author didn’t have enough money to buy expensive toys 52. Why did the author walk up to the little boy? A. To see whom the boy was.
B. To ask whom the boy would give the doll to. C. To ask why the boy didn’t go home. D. To buy the doll for the boy.
53. What do we know about the little boy’s mother? A. She was going to a far-away city on business. B. She was looking after her child in the hospital. C. She was traveling alone in a foreign country. D. She was going to die because of an accident. 54. What does the underlined sentence mean?
A. The author was frightened. B. The author was surprised. C. The author was doubtful.
D. The author felt sad about the boy’s family. 55. The purpose of the passage is _______. A. to tell us a true story about a little boy B. to tell us we should love and cherish our family C. to help us buy Christmas gifts for our family D. to tell us about a terrible accident

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。 We’ve all experienced some form of fear of failure while growing up or as an adult. It stops some of us from even trying, while others try
half-heartedly. I’ve done both in so many areas of life; I thought it would be helpful for me to share some of my fears with you, along with some advice to help you with yours. We’ll look at what fear of failure really is, how it affects our motivation, and what to do to face the fear and build success
upon success.
Fear of failure is a phobia(恐惧症). Actually, many phobias are related to performance anxiety. It can present itself in sporting events, love for life, business, school, and church...anywhere. I’ve had serious anxiety in all of the above. I’ve “choked” (窒息) under pressure during sporting events, musical performances, public speaking, asking girls out, and dancing. I can remember anxiety as early as elementary school, where, even though I knew the answers, I couldn’t put them on the board or say them when called upon. As I got older, I was able to force myself to do some of these things despite my fears, though I couldn’t tell you how, at the time.
[写作内容]

写作二 (One possible version) How to Deal with Your Fear of Failure
According to the passage, we know that everyone can have fear of failure at any time in his life. We can never get rid of it completely. What’s worse, it may develop into a serious anxiety.
In fact, what we all fear is fear itself. If this lasts too long, we may become afraid to do what we know we can do. Even though we can force ourselves to do something, we may have trouble doing it well.
How can you deal with your fear of failure? First of all, I think, you should know that it is common for everyone to have fear of failure, not only you. Fear of failure is part of our lives. Prepare yourself carefully before doing anything, and you will be able to relax. Even just telling others about your fear of failure can help you reduce your anxiety. Last but not least, exercising or taking a deep breath before doing what you fear may help you stay calm. In a word, believe in yourself and you can do anything.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Joshua Haines House,a long time home of the famous congressman and later judge.Although
Haines and his family lived here from 1880 until his death in 1915,he was not the original owner of the house. It was built much earlier for a banker who later became a minister.Following the Haines family, the house was owned by an industrialist. It was bought in 1924 by the State and opened to the public shortly after. The Haines family returned some possessions and furniture to the house for visitors’ enjoyment.I would like to pull your attention to the library on your left.Through the open door, you can see the desk where the
congressman wrote many of his famous speeches. The drawing room to your right was used of course when guests visited. But the congressman often sat with his close friends in the kitchen at the back of the house. It was there they discussed bills that later became law.The Haines liked to spend some time each day in the sun room just off this house. It was here that Haines liked to write letters and sometimes play the violin while his wife,Martha, sewed or took care of her plants. We will now visit the rooms I have just described, beginning with the library.
