TheCLC409isaverywideband,DCcoupledmonolithicoperationalamplifierdesignedspecificallyforwidedynamicrangesystemsrequiringexceptionalsignalfidelity.Benefit-ingfromNational’scurrentfeedbackarchitecture,theCLC409offersagainrangeof±1to±10whileprovidingstable,oscillationfreeoperationwithoutexternalcompensa-tion,evenatunitygain.
Withits350MHzsmallsignalbandwidth(VOUT=2VPP),10-bitdistortionlevelsthrough20MHz(RL=100Ω),8-bit
inputreferreddistortionlevelsthrough60MHz,2.2nV/

TheCLC409achievesitsexcellentpulseanddistortionper-formancebyusingthecurrentfeedbacktopologypioneeredbyComlinearCorporation.Theloopgainforacurrentfeed-backopamp,andhencethefrequencyresponse,ispre-dominantlysetbythefeedbackresistorvalue.TheCLC409isoptimizedforusewitha250Ωfeedbackresistor.Usinglowervaluescanleadtoexcessiveringinginthepulseresponsewhileahighervaluewilllimitthebandwidth.Appli-cationNoteOA-13discussesthisindetailalongwiththeoccasionswhereadifferentRfmightbeadvantageous.
HarmonicDistortion
TheCLC409hasbeenoptimizedforexceptionallylowhar-monicdistortionwhiledrivingverydemandingresistiveorcapacitiveloads.Generally,whenusedastheinputamplifiertoveryhighspeedflashADCs,thedistortionsintroducedbytheconverterwilldominateoverthelowCLC409distortionsshownontheplotsonthepreviouspage.The0.01µFca-pacitor(Css)shownacrossthesuppliesinFigure1andFigure2iscriticaltoachievingthelowest2ndharmonicdistortion.
The2-tone,3rdorderspuriousplotshowsarelativelycon-stantdifferencebetweenthetestpowerlevelandthespuri-ouslevelwiththatdifferencedependingonfrequency.The

Thetwoinputbiascurrentsarephysicallyunrelatedinbothmagnitudeandpolarityforthecurrentfeedbacktopology.Itisnotpossible,therefore,tocanceltheireffectsbymatchingthesourceimpedanceforthetwoinputs(asiscommonlydoneformatchedinputbiascurrentdevices).
Thetotaloutputnoiseiscomputedinasimilarfashiontooutputoffsetvoltage.Usingtheinputnoisevoltageandtwoinputnoisecurrents,theoutputnoiseisdevelopedthroughthesamegainequationsforeachtermbutcombinedasthesquarerootofthesumofsquaredcontributingelements.SeeApplicationNoteOA-12forafulldiscussionofnoisecalculationsforcurrentfeedbackamplifiers.PrintedCircuitLayout
