Last year, a special kind of glove came out. It was invented to help blind people to learn Braille, which is a special system for the blind to read by touching. Shaking motors (震动马达) are put on each finger of the glove. They can make different sounds to tell a user which letter he is touching. Recently, two British college students have invented another special glove for the blind. It can make the user feel small and quick movements. An ultrasonic sensor (超声波传感器) with a battery is put on the back of the glove. When the user wearing the glove is close to an object(物体), ultrasonic waves (超声波) from the glove are sent out (发出). As soon as they hit the object in front, the waves will return to the glove. Then the waves cause the glove to shake. And the ultrasonic sensor makes different kinds of sounds. The sounds make the user know how far he is from the object.
In the college invention competition, the two students got first prize and won 1,540 pounds. One of the designers said, \"Now the ultrasonic sensor on the glove is quite large. We're going to use the money to develop a smaller and lighter ultrasonic sensor.\"

Take a look at the label(标签) on almost any bottle of milk and you may see the word PASTEURIZED. What does that mean? Let's find out by meetingLouis Pasteur. Louis Pasteur was bom in 1822 in a little town in France. As he grew up, he loved to paint. He loved to look at the world around him. When he went to college in Paris, he showed interest in looking through a microscope. A microscope makes things look a lot bigger; it lets you see things you can't see just with your eyes. Looking through a microscope, Pasteur found a living world in a drop of water. He saw and drew pictures of the small living things-he called them \"microbes\" or \"germs\"---that crowded in a drop of water. One day a winemaker came into the lab, hoping that someone could help him with his problem. \"Sometimes my wine tastes delicious, but sometimes it turns sour(酸的),” he said to Pasteur. \"Can you help me find out why?\"
Pasteur put some drops of the wine under the microscope. He noticed that the sour wine had some unusual germs. If he killed these germs, maybe he could keep the wine from turning sour. He experimented(试验) with different ways to kill the germs. In the end he found heating(加热) the wine seemed to work best. The winemaker tried it, and every bottle of wine tasted good. Pasteur's idea worked for other people, too. When farmers heated milk, it didn't sour so quickly. When breweries(啤酒师) heated beer, it tasted better. People called the process(过程) \"pasteurization\"---heating a liquid to kill bad germs. Aren't you glad that the milk you drink has been pasteurized?

The Earth has warmed by about half a degree(0.5) over the last 100 years. It could be getting warmer on its own, but many scientists think that people are making the Earth warmer by making a greenhouse effect(温室效应).
The greenhouse effect is important. Without it, the Earth would not be warm enough for us to live on. But just a little warmer than it is now could cause(引起) problems for humans, plants and animals. Many of the things we do every day can change the Earth's temperature by sending greenhouse gases(废气) into the air. We send greenhouse gases into the air when we watch TV, turn on lights, dry hair, play video games, wash or dry our clothes or drive cars. The rubbish(waste) from factories and homes also produces green-house gases.
Even a small change in temperature can affect(影响) our weather. This can cause changes in the sea levels, the air, flooding, and our fresh water. The change in the temperature can also cause changes in the living places for animals and plants, endangering many animals.
Global warming(全球变暖) is a big problem, and every little bit we do can help. We can save electricity. We can save energy in other ways such as by taking buses or walking rather than driving cars. We can recycle to reduce the rubbish and save natural resources such as trees, oil and metals. We can buy products that don't do bad to the environment and we can turn to solar energy.
