Beijing's battle to correct English-language signs before the 2008 Olympics has started. By the end of the year, all public ―W.C.‖ in the city will be called ―toilets‖. In western countries people don't use ―W.C‖, because it is quite rude in English. Road signs are also on the list. These signs will be changed into real English word. For example, ―Dong Chang'an Jie‖ will become ―East Chang'an Avenue‖. But there is still a question. What to do about menus? Thousands of tourists, athletes and reporters will visit the city, and most of them can't speak Chinese or understand Chinese characters. Now linguists (语言学者) are trying hard to translate popular Chinese dishes like ―ants climbing the tree ‖ into good English. Chinese children will be able to get a taste of adult working life in the Kids City. It will allow children aged 5 to 10 to try out different jobs after it opens. The world's first Kids City was opened in Mexico City in 1999. In 2006, Kids City opened its Tokyo Park in Japan. It became an attraction to kids. Now it will begin in China. It will offer more than 50 jobs, including pilots, doctors, police officers and lawyers. Inside the city, every kid would get a bank account (帐户) holding special money. And they can only spend the money in the park. They could earn more money by working in different places. 根据以上材料,选择最佳答案。
( ) 35. Why will all public ―W.C.‖ be changed into ―toilets‖ in Beijing?

A. ―Xi Chang'an Street‖ B. ―Dong Chang'an Jie‖ C. ―East Chang'an Avenue‖ D. ―Ants climbing the tree‖ ( ) 37. It's about _________ years since the world's first Kids City was opened. A. seven B. nine C. two D. five ( ) 38. What's the Kids City opened for?
A. Only to let children have fun. B. Only to let children make money. C. To let children find good jobs.
D. To let children get a taste of adult working life. ( ) 39. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Kids City will allow children aged 5 to 12 to try out different jobs. B. Children can be pilots in Kids City. C. Kids City will be built in China soon.
D. Children can only spend the special money in the park.
B
We do some strange things when we don’t like the way our life is going. Too often we blame (埋怨) someone else.
―I wish my parents were more understanding.‖
―I have such a bad Chemistry teacher!‖
―My friends are so boring and self-centered. They make my life worse and worse.‖ Blame! Blames! Blame!
It seems natural so sing this self-pitying song, but the truth is, if you don’t like your life, you should do something about it. No one else knows exactly how you feel or what you need. No one can read your mind correctly. You are the only one with the power(能力) to check your life, and if you want it to be different, you can change what you’re doing. This means asking …‖What do I need? What do I want to do?‖ instead of trying to meet others’ needs. For example, try to decide how you want to spend your evening instead of asking somebody else for advice. We teach other people how we want to be treated. If you don’t think of our own needs, no one else will either.
When you’re in trouble, don’t give away your power to decide how you feel abut yourself. Choose how you want to think and act. Other people cant’ make you unhappy or angry. They only act in their own way and then it’s up to you to decide how you will respond (回应). For example, your friends go out to lunch without you. You feel angry. How are you going to act? You may blame your friends … ―They are not kind. Who needs them anyway?‖ or you may tell your friends how you feel, listen to their explanation (解释), and let them know you’d like to be invited next time.
When you decide everything in your own way, you’re getting hold of your own life and shaping it according to your tastes and feelings. You can choose to be happy, to make friends and to build an interesting life. When you blame others for what is or isn’t happening in your life, you have stopped growing or learning.
One of the most important rules is that you can never change another person by your direct action. The only person you have the right and power to change is yourself. Once you change, the other person then has something different to respond to and change is possible. If you want change in your life, begin with yourself … put love into your power to take action.
( )40. What should we do if we don’t like our life? A. Sing that self-pitying song. B. Read our minds correctly. C. Change what we’re doing. D. Tell others what we want. ( )41. If the writer’s friends have dinner together without him, he may _______. A. forget it and be still friendly with them B. talk to them and try to find out why C. do the same thing to them in return D. ask somebody else to talk to them ( )42. What’s the writer’s idea about how to change others?
A. He thinks it’s impossible to change others. B. He believes our love can change everything. C. He chooses to talk with others directly. D. He prefers to change ourselves first instead.
( )43. How many points of view (观点) are mentioned in the passage? A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.

Animals seem to have the sense to eat when they are hungry and they do not eat more than their bodies need. It has been shown that rats will, when given a choice over a period of time, prefer water with vitamins to water without vitamins even there is no difference in taste or smell between the two water bottles. When a fragrant flavor (香味) was added to the vitamin—enriched water, the rats did seem to develop a taste for it and kept drinking it, even after the vitamins were switched to the clear water. In time, however, they broke the
habit and went back to where the necessary vitamins were.
In a classic experiment, babies of 6 to 12 months old were placed in a cafeteria feeding arrangement, with a wide selection of baby food before them. They were given whatever they pointed to or appeared interested in. We are told that at first they showed some unusual eating patterns(方式), but over a period of time they managed to select well-balanced diet.
So, in selecting food, rats and babies do seem to know and act on what’s best for them. Apparently, there is a kind of ―body wisdom‖, which humans soon lose. Most of us do not eat as wisely as we could. Many of our food preferences are culturally determined and influenced by long established habits. Some people eat foxes, dogs and blackbirds, while we eat cows and pigs. So what people eat and how much they eat seems to be greatly influenced by what is going on around them.
( )44. As far as their eating habits are concerned, babies and rats are similar in that both _____.
A. have the natural abilities to choose a balanced diet B. develop a taste for the same kinds of flavors C. have the same eating patterns D. prefer flavored food and drink
( )45. In the experiment on rats, a fragrant flavor was added to the water to ______.
A. prove that vitamins are tasteless B. find out rats preference in flavor
C. encourage rats to drink vitamin-enriched water
D. test whether rats know which drink is good for them
( )46. According to the passage, adults eating habits differ from those of babies because _____.
A. adults have more choices of food than babies in eating patterns B. adults usually cannot resist the temptation of various delicious food C. adults’ eating habits are closely related to the social and culture customs D. adults know better than babies what kinds of food are good for their health

三、阅读与表达 (共10分,每小题2分)
Do you have a goal for life? What's it? Do you want to become a writer, singer or just become a rich person?
A recent survey shows that in modern society, most people pick up practical goals, such as ―earning money to buy a house and a car‖, ―to improve one's life quality‖, ―finding a good job‖.
Wang You worked in a small firm (商行) in Nanjing. The job was good and he didn't have to work for extra hours. However, he felt the work was not exciting at all and the life was boring. So he gave up his job and went to Beijing in February, 2007. When he arrived in Beijing, he set his new goal as finding a good job.
Nowadays more and more people want to live a better life. This fact shows that the society is making progress and people's life goals have become more practical. One researcher says, ―Everybody has his/her own life goal, which will be surely different from people to people. If one is poor, one's life goal will be to earn more money; if one doesn't have a diploma, studying hard to get a diploma will become his life goal; and if one doesn't have love, his life goal will be to look for it. But if one has no life goal, he will idle away (虚度) his lifetime.‖
根据短文内容,完成下列各题。
13. Did Wang You have to work for extra hours?
14. What will a poor man’s life goal be according to this passage? 15. Where did Wang You work before he came to Beijing? 16. Why does the writer mention Wang You?
