3-TerminalAdjustableRegulator
GeneralDescription
TheLM117seriesofadjustable3-terminalpositivevoltageregulatorsiscapableofsupplyinginexcessof1.5Aovera1.2Vto37Voutputrange.Theyareexceptionallyeasytouseandrequireonlytwoexternalresistorstosettheoutputvoltage.Further,bothlineandloadregulationarebetterthanstandardfixedregulators.Also,theLM117ispackagedinstandardtransistorpackageswhichareeasilymountedandhandled.
Inadditiontohigherperformancethanfixedregulators,theLM117seriesoffersfulloverloadprotectionavailableonlyinIC’s.Includedonthechiparecurrentlimit,thermaloverloadprotectionandsafeareaprotection.Alloverloadprotectioncircuitryremainsfullyfunctionaleveniftheadjustmentter-minalisdisconnected.
Normally,nocapacitorsareneededunlessthedeviceissituatedmorethan6inchesfromtheinputfiltercapacitorsinwhichcaseaninputbypassisneeded.Anoptionaloutputcapacitorcanbeaddedtoimprovetransientresponse.Theadjustmentterminalcanbebypassedtoachieveveryhighripplerejectionratioswhicharedifficulttoachievewithstan-dard3-terminalregulators.
Besidesreplacingfixedregulators,theLM117isusefulinawidevarietyofotherapplications.Sincetheregulatoris“floating”andseesonlytheinput-to-outputdifferentialvolt-age,suppliesofseveralhundredvoltscanberegulatedaslongasthemaximuminputtooutputdifferentialisnotex-ceeded,i.e.,avoidshort-circuitingtheoutput.
Also,itmakesanespeciallysimpleadjustableswitchingregulator,aprogrammableoutputregulator,orbyconnectingafixedresistorbetweentheadjustmentpinandoutput,theLM117canbeusedasaprecisioncurrentregulator.Sup-plieswithelectronicshutdowncanbeachievedbyclampingtheadjustmentterminaltogroundwhichprogramstheout-putto1.2Vwheremostloadsdrawlittlecurrent.
Forapplicationsrequiringgreateroutputcurrent,seeLM150series(3A)andLM138series(5A)datasheets.Forthenegativecomplement,seeLM137seriesdatasheet.
