Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course that he attends gives him a credit(学分) which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses, each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice.

For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to future employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm(热情). Large companies need a way to reach the saving of the public at large(大多数,整个). The same problem, on a small scale, faces practically every company trying to develop new products and create new jobs. There can be little prospect of raising(筹集)the sort of sums needed from friends and people we know, and while banks may agree to provide short-term finance, they are generally unwilling to provide money on a permanent basis for long-term projects. So companies turn to the public,, inviting people to lend them money, or take a share in the business in exchange for a share in future profits. This they do by issuing (发行)stocks and shares in the business through The Stock Exchange.(证券交易所) By doing so they can put into circulation(流通) the savings of individuals and institutions, both at home and overseas.

When the saver needs his money back, he does not have to go to the company

with whom he originally placed it. Instead, he sells his shares to some other saver who is seeking to invest his money.

Many of the services needed both by industry and by each of us are provide by the Governmet or by local authorities.Without hospitals, roads, electricity, telephones, railways, this country could not function.(运作) All these require continuous spending on new equipment and new development if they are to serve us properly, requiring more money than is raised through taxes alone. Auctions (拍卖) are public sales of goods, conducted by an officially approved auctioneer (拍卖人). This is called “knocking down “the gods, for the bidding ends when the auctioneer bangs a small hammer on a raised platform.

The ancient Romans probably invented sales by auction, and the English word comes from the Latin “anctic” meaning “increase”. The Romans usually sold in this way the spoils taken in war, these sales were called “sub hasta”, meaning “under the spear”, a spear being stuck in the ground as a signal for a crowd to gather.

In England in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries goods were often sold “by the candle”; a short candle was lit by the auctioneer, and bids could be made while it was burning.

Practically all goods can be sold by auction. Among these are coffee, skins, wool, tea, cocoa, furs, fruit, vegetables and wines. Auction sales are also usual for land and property, antique furniture, pictures, rare books, old china, and works of art. An auction is usually advertised beforehand with full particulars of the articles to be sold and where and when they can be viewed by the buyers. If the advertisement cannot give full details, catalogues are printed, and each group of goods to be sold together, called a “lot” ( 件,组), is usually given a number.
