SECTION B PASSAGESDirections: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文: The delicate material that most American brides wear upon their wedding day, lace, was a surprisingly serious issue in the politics of Europe and the United States until this century. In the 1500’s, the British economy was almost drained by the purchase of foreign lace. The nations of Europe began requiring their ambassadors to observe and report upon the state of the lace making industry in large lace producing countries such as Belgium. The British solved their problems by creating a lace making machine in the 1600’s. The machines were considered such state secrets that they were illegal to export. Finally, however, several of the machines were dismantled and shipped to France by ship. The Frenchmen brought the fashion to America and the Americans followed the same route as their French comrades—they smuggled lace making machines from Britain. Unfortunately, these machines weighed too much and covered an area of fifty feet long and ten feet wide, making them difficult to transport all the way across the Atlantic. Finally, in 1909, the British allowed lace making machines to be freely and legally imported to the United States. It wasn’t until the conclusion of all this international intrigue that the custom of wearing lace veils at weddings was feasible for the typical American woman.

听力原文: About one million years ago, the Ice Age began. The Ice Age was a long period of time in which four great glaciers pushed southward to cover almost all the upper half of North America, and then melted away. Each glacier was a thick sheet of ice and snow that spread out from a centre near what is now Hudson Bay in Canada. The winters were long, and the cool summers were too short to melt much of the ice and snow. The ever-growing sheet built up to a thickness of two miles at its centre. As all glaciers do, these great glaciers slid. They pushed down giant trees in their paths and scraped the earth bare of soil. Many animals moved farther south to escape. Others stayed and were destroyed. When winters of little snow came, the summer suns cut into the edges of the ice sheets. As the glaciers melted, rocks, soil and other things that had mixed with the ice and snow were left. New hills, lakes and rivers were formed. The last of the great glaciers began its melting about 11,000 years ago. Its melting formed the Great Lakes. These lakes are today a little changed from their early sizes and shapes. The largest of the North American river systems was also influenced by the glaciers. This is the Mississippi-Missouri-Ohio system. These rivers were miles wide at first. Through the years they settled into their present channels.

15. What is the main idea of this passage? A.The Ice Age was a long period of time.

听力原文: A long time ago children had a different way of life. Back during this point in history, the children had to learn physical survival skills such as being alert around moving objects and drawing back when they neared something unsafe. They didn’t need to attend schools because they could learn everything from the school of experience. The experience of their daily lives gave them enough education to survive during that less complex period. Their parents would teach them all they needed to know about capturing their food and tilling the earth. Learning the basic survival skills of how to feed oneself and grow food was the only thing most people needed to learn during that time period. Slowly, however, life became more complex, and people found the need to communicate with people in distant places. The world was expanding, and people needed to interact with people outside of their little town or village for business or for personal reasons. Then, it became important that children learn to read and write. When money became the form of buying and selling, they needed to learn how to count and calculate. Because these skills could not be learned from firsthand experience, schools became necessary to teach them these skills.

18. Why didn’t children go to school a long time ago? A.Because they were taught in private groups at home.

B.Because they gained the important information by direct experience. C.Because their parents would teach them all the useful things.

D.Because teachers would come to their homes to teach them everything.

21. What can we infer from the passage?

A.Learning history in school is very important. B.Building more schools is difficult.

C.The more complicated skills taught in schools are needed in the future. D.Children don’t have to learn the basic survival skills which are innate.

正确答案:C

解析:推断题。文章提到:孩子们在学校学习读、写和算术的技能。将来,随着社会进步,一些更复杂的知识也需要通过上学读书来掌握,由此推断选项C正确。 知识模块:听力

听力原文: The first Earth Day—April 22, 1970—is credited with launching the modern environmental movement. It was a day of peaceful, mass demonstrations by millions of people across the United States calling on the government to adopt policies to clean up and protect the environment. U.S. government officials responded: Congress enacted laws to clean the air and protect drinking water, wildlife habitats, and the ocean. Congress also created the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, to oversee the nation’s progress. EPA administrator Stephen Johnson recalls the first Earth Day in 1970. “Approximately 20 million people across America celebrated the first Earth Day. It was a day and time when our cities were literally buried under their own smog and polluted rivers caught on fire. But thirty-five years later, by the work of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the nation, indeed, air is cleaner, our water is purer, and our land is better protected.” Johnson says that the EPA is currently spending most of its seven-and-a-half billion dollar yearly budget on research and technology to reduce the threat of climate change—so-called global warming—which many scientists blame on our industrial emissions of carbon dioxide.

听力原文: These days searching for a number in a five centimeter thick telephone directory seems very old fashioned. Voice recognition systems are becoming more and more common and efficient: the best of them apparently recognize 49 out of every 50 words. These devices save companies a huge amount of money. Stephen Evans in New York has been talking to the machines and to the men who design them. I had a bit of a Basil Fawlty moment, the other day. I rang 411, the American directory enquiries which now uses a voice recognition system. I told the machine I wanted the number for “Harlem Auto Mall” and she—for this machine had a female voice—replied “Harlem Public School 154”. No doubt like lots of people, I found myself ranting. Machines, you see, have personalities, and banks, phone companies, railways and all kinds of alleged help-lines are spending a lot of money trying to find out what kinds of voices to give the machines that speak to us, the public, on their behalf.
