Last week, I had an emergency wisdom tooth extraction (拔智齿). It left me swollenand – excepta few words forced out of my mouth’s good side – unable to speak. It was weirdspending a few days in this state, but judging by other people’s responses, not as weird as it was for them.I thought my boyfriend would be the first to bee unbearable. “It’s strange – you ing into the room but not saying anything,” he’d protest. I tried to imagine how awkward it must be to have half of the household (of two) go silent. However, when I spotted him in the kitchen at midnight, cooking potatoes for my recovery and filling the silence by singing “your lovely facial lumps (肿块)” to the tune of My Humps, I, too, was surprised, but also touched. When I felt stronger, I went to my local shop. It still hurt when I moved my face, so when I ran into a friend, I couldn’t say anything. The friend wanted my opinion on aneye-catching Twitter disagreement and looked disappointed that I didn’t seem bothered. I was not bothered – and it felt good to remember that.Later I visited my mom, who chatted away as usual. She didn’t even notice that I was on silent mode. This confirms my belief that my family role is part daughter, part audience.People say silence is golden.Sometimes it is wise to say nothing and to let people reveal themselves. Perhaps that is the wisdom of the wisdom tooth. Maybe when they arrive with all their pain, forcing us – even just for a while – to move our sore mouths a little less, they give a lesson for living well: Listen, observe and try being quiet now and then. Then maybe adulthood won’t be quite like pulling teeth.
24. What does the underlined word “weird” mean in Para.1?A. Sorrowful.B. Strange.C. Satisfactory.D. Wise.
25. How did the author feel about her boyfriend’s response?A.Sad and worried.B. Upset and angry.C. Surprised and moved.D. Awkward and disappointed.
26. Why did the author feel good when she was with her friend?A. They shared opinions about the disagreement.B. They hadn’t seen each other for a long time.C. She quickly recovered from the surgery.D. She wasn’t upset by her inability to speak.
27. What is the wisdom of the wisdom tooth according to the author?A. We should care for people we love.B. Adults should face challenges bravely.C. It is fine to reveal your weakness to others.D. It’s wise to listen, observe and be quiet.

Although life on Earth was chaotic in 2020, we can still look to the stars for new hope in 2021.Last year, Japan’s Hayabusa2 returned with several grams of samples from the asteroid (小行星) Ryugu. China also brought back some lunar soil and rocks within a month. Meanwhile, NASA teamed up with SpaceX to send two men to the International Space Station. Despite the pandemic, 2020 has been a busy year for space, and 2021 looks to be busier.Three shuttles launched in 2020 are on their way

China’s Tianwen-1 mission is also expected to arrive in mid-February, making China the second country to soft-land a spacecraft on the Martian surface. Finally, NASA’s Mars Perseverance from the USA launched in 2020 will likely be the third craft to reach Mars – also in February, according to Ars Technica. After many delays, the James Webb Space Telescopeis planning to launch on Halloween on a European Ariane 5 rocket. After the launch, its sunshield and mirror will be put together and finished over two weeks. The Webb telescope will find the first galaxies that formed in the early universe and see stars forming planetary systemsthrough dusty clouds, according to NASA.China will also begin the first steps toward building the country’s first space station. Within the first half of the year, China will launch the core module (组件) Tianhe on a Long March 5B rocket. This module will include rooms for Chinese astronauts and visitors to the station. Fuel and supply missions will follow the initial launch, and two experiment modules will join the station in 2022.With so much more human activity in space, orbital debris (残骸) is being more of a concern. To that end, Astroscale’s ELSA-d mission is the first step toward mercial debris removal as it will attempt to move dead satellites and remove space junk.2021 will be a year of science “the likes of which we’ve rarely seen,” according to Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator at NASA. 28. Plastic pollution has long been a problem, but now it’s gotten to a new height – literally.Microplastics, referring to plastic pieces and particles less than 5 millimeters in diameter, have been found on Mount Qomolangma as high as 8,440 meters above sea level, just 408.86 meters below the peak of the mountain, according to a recent study published in the journal One Earth.“These are the highest microplastics discovered so far,” lead author Imogen Napper from the University of Plymouth, UK, said in a statement.Scientists collected snow and water samples from 19 different locations from 4,200 meters above sea level all the way up to the peak of Mount Qomolangma. They found microplastics in all the water samples and part of the snow samples. The most polluted sample was from the Base Camp in Nepal, where most human activity on the mountain is concentrated. It had 79 particles of microplastics per liter of snow. But how have these fragments made it all this way and in such a great abundance? The answer is obvious– human activities. It is climbers who bring plastic products to the mountain. Even if they don’t litter, just walking for 20 minutes or opening a bottle of water can release microplastics into the environment. The fact is that plastic pollution has reached even the most remote places on Earth. Researchers even found a plastic bag at the deepest point in the world’s oceans – in the Mariana Trench, located in the Pacific Ocean. The bag is the same as the ones

monly used in grocery stores.“What we don’t yet fully know is the potential problems these tiny pieces of plastic could be having to ecosystems, to organisms (微生物) and even to our own health as well,” said Christian Dunn of Bangor University, UK.Then what can we do? “We need to start focusing on deeper technological solutions that focus on microplastics, like changing fabricdesign and adding natural fibers instead of plastic when possible,” Napper said.
32. Where did Napper’s team find the microplastics?A. At 408.86 meters below the peak of Mount Qomolangma.B. In all water and snow samples collected.C. At 4,200 meters above the Everest Base Camp.D. At the foot of Mount Qomolangma.
33. How can we protect Mount Qomolangma from microplastics?A. By stopping littering.B. By avoiding bottled water.C. By reducing human activities.D. By limiting use of equipment.
34. What did Napper suggest?A. Promoting new styles of clothes.B. Improving technology for ecosystems.C. Replacing plastic with natural fibers.D. Researching the harm of microplastics.
35. What is the best title for the passage? A. PlasticPollution Reaches New Height B. How to Prevent PlasticPollution C. Human Activities Lead to Pollution
D. Plastic Pollution Damaged the Ecosystem

“OK!”I called back. I wished I could feel excited about my first Open House at my new school, but I was worried. What would other kids say when they found out my parents can’t hear?
And I wanted Evelyn to visit, but then she’d see how different my house was. My parents use a video phone so they can use sign language to municate with callers. We also have a light on the wall that flashes when the phone or doorbell rings. Would Evelyn still like to visit my house after she knows that?
That night, Dad drove us to the brightly lit school. We stopped in front of the bulletin board (公告栏) in the hall. “Look at Amy’s picture!” Mom said, too loud! She does that when she’s excited, because she can’t hear herself. Some older kids turned to stare at us and I wanted to hide.
I led my family into my classroom and looked around. Evelyn was not there yet.Ms. Jennings walked over to us. I introduced my teacher to my family and explained that my parents were deaf. “Oh,” she said. “Well, how do you say wele in sign language?”“Like this.” I swept my open right hand in toward my body, palm up. She repeated the motion. “Thank you,” Mom said, smiling. “Nice to meet you!” Ms. Jennings looked surprised. “You speak very well,” she said. In sign language, I repeated what Ms. Jennings had said in case my parents hadn’t read her lips.
“Was it difficult teaching Amy to talk?” Ms. Jennings asked. “Not really,”Dad said in sign language, and I translated so Ms. Jennings understood. “She went to daycare with other hearing kids.”
