As my train wasn\"t due to leave for another hour, I had plenty of time to spare . After buying some newspapers to read on the journey, I made my way to the luggage office to collect the heavy suitcase I had left there three days before. There were only a few people waiting, and I took out my wallet to find the receipt for my case. The receipt didn\"t seem to be where I had left it. I emptied the contents of the wallet, and railway tickets, money, scraps of paper, and photographs fell out of it; but no matter how hard I searched, the receipt was nowhere to be found. When my turn came, I explained the situation sorrowfully to the assistant. The man looked at me suspiciously as if to say that he had heard this type of story many times and asked me to describe the case. I told him that it was an old, brown-looking object no different from the many cases I could see on the shelves. The assistant then gave me a form and told me to make a list of the chief contents of the case. If they were correct, he said, I could take the case away. I tried to remember all the articles I had hurriedly packed and wrote them down as they came to me. After I had done this, I went to look among the shelves. There were hundreds of cases there and for one dreadful moment, it occurred to me that if someone had picked the receipt up, he could have easily claimed the case already. This hadn\"t happened fortunately, for after a time I found the case lying on its side high up in a comer. After examining the articles inside, the assistant was soon satisfied that it was mine and told me I could take the case away. Again I took out my wallet: this time to pay. I pulled out a ten-shilling note and the \"lost\" receipt slipped out with it. I couldn\"t help blushing and looked up at the assistant. He was nodding his head knowingly, as if to say that he had often seen this happen before too!(分数:4.00) (1).The underlined words \"to spare\" probably means \"______.\"(分数:1.00) A.to show mercy to

B.to leave over or more than you need √ C.to be free

(3).There were a lot of things in his wallet except ______.(分数:1.00)

A.railway tickets B.money C.photographs D.ID card √

(4).The writer took out his wallet the second time to ______.(分数:1.00) A.search for his receipt again B.find some paper to write on C.pay for the service √

D.see if his railway-tickets were there

七、C(总题数:2,分数:7.00)

WASHINGTON -- considering the serious warnings lately about Internet viruses(病毒), users may don\"t use their machines just to keep them safe. In reality, common sense and a few basic tips can keep Internet surfers secure.

Anti-virus software is a must, and it should be updated at least once a week to recognize newly viruses. If this is not done, you will meet great troubles.

People with broadband Internet connections should have also a firewall. These protect the computer from attacks by hackers(黑客).

Then it is time to think about computer habits. Unlike old viruses, which spread only through shared disks, the Internet brings viruses straight to the e-mail box. ff an e-mail with attachment(附件) comes from an unknown sender, or unexpectedly from a known\" sender, it should not be opened.

On receiving an unexpected attachment from a friend, experts suggest a telephone call to make sure of the mail\" s source before opening. If you open the mail without any consideration, you will be easily attacked by the hackers.(分数:3.00)

(1).Why should anti-virus software be updated at least once a week?(分数:1.00) A.Because the newly published anti-virus software is more expensive. B.Because the previous(先前的) anti-virus software cannot work any longer. C.Because the inventors of viruses have suggested this idea. D.Because computer viruses are always developing. √

Anti-virus software is a must, and it should be updated at least once a week to recognize newly viruses. D。 (2).Which of the following is suggested by computer experts?(分数:1.00) A.Don\"t rush to open any e-mail attachment. √ B.Never open any e-mail attachment.

C.It\"s always safe to open an e-mail attachment from a friend.

D.Whenever you receive an e-mail, you should make a call to make sure whom it come from. If an e-mail with attachment(附件)comes from an unknown sender, or unexpectedly from a known sender, it should not be opened.

(3).Which of the following is NOT right according to the passage?(分数:1.00) A.Something can be done to keep our computers safe.

B.Even an e-mail attachment coming from a friend may not be safe to open. C.We should not use our computers to defend ourselves from viruses. √

D.Anti-virus software made some years ago is hard to protect today\"s computers.

We have five times travelling every month: four during weekends and one on Wednesday morning. The first place we are going is St. Ives. That\"s on the 6th of August and we will have only 18 seats available because we\"re going there by mini-bus. And that\"s the day in town with the optional extra of visiting the Hepworth Museum.

And then there\"s a trip in London on the 14th of August. And we will be on a medium-size coach so there will be 49 seats on that. And the optional extra is visiting the Tower of London. After that our destination is Bristol on the 20th of August. This time we choose a different mini-bus

with 16 seats available.

Next, we\"re going to Salisbury on the 27th of August. And that\"s always very popular, for the optional extra is Stonehenge. So we\"re going to take the large coach with 52 seats.

The last one we\"re going is Bath on the 31 st of August. It\"s the Roman city. And we\"re going there on the 14 seats mini-bus. It is well worth visiting because the American Museum is w ere we\"re arriving.(分数:4.00)

(1).Which two trips can take the least number of students?(分数:1.00) A.Bristol and Bath. √ B.St. lves and London. C.Salisbury and St, Ives. D.London and Bristol.

这样很容易选出答案为A,即Bristol(16人)和Bath(14人)。

(2).Which of the following two trips can visit the museum?(分数:1.00) A.London and Bath. B.Salisbury and Bristol. C.Bath and St. Ives. √ D.London and Salisbury.

(3).Where is the majority of students would rather go to?(分数:1.00) A.St. Ives. B.Salisbury. √ C.London. D.Bristol.

(4).Which of the following statements is TRUE?(分数:1.00) A.Students can visit the American Museum in Stives. B.The school organizes trips on Wednesday mornings.

C.If you want to be with the least people for a trip, you can go out at the end of the month. √ D.Students will go to the first place on a medium-size coach.

从第一段可知学校组织旅行时间为four during weekends and one on Wednesday morning, B项说每个周三上午,应排除。

九、E(总题数:1,分数:5.00)

Reading is not the only way to gain knowledge of the work in the past. There is another large. reservoir which may be called experience, and the college students will find, that every craftsman (工匠) has something he can teach and will generally teach gladly any college student who does not look down upon them. The information from them differs from that in textbooks and papers chiefly in that its theoretical part—the explanations of why things happen, is frequently quite fantastic. But the demonstration (示范) and report of what happens, and how it happens are correct even if the reports are in completely unscientific terms. Presently the college students will learn, in this case also, what to accept and what to reject. One important thing for a college student to remember is that if Aristotle could talk to the fisherman, so can he.

Another source of knowledge is the vast store of traditional practices handed down from father to son, or mother to daughter, of old country customs, of folklore (风俗). All this is very difficult for a college student to examine, for much knowledge and personal experience is needed here to separate good plants from wild grass. The college students should learn to realize and remember how much of real value science has found in this wide and confused wilderness and how long scientific discoveries of what had existed in this area long.(分数:5.00)

(1).In the last paragraph the phrase \"this wide and confused wilderness\" refers to ______.(分数:1.00)

A.personal experience

B.wild weeds among good plants C.the information from the parents

D.the vast store of traditional practices √

(2).Which of the following statements is supported by the passage?(分数:1.00) A.The college students have trouble separating good plants from wild grass. B.Craftsmen\"s experience is usually unscientific.

C.Craftsmen don\"t like teaching the contemptuous (傲慢的) college students. √ D.Traditional practices are as important as experience for the college students.

(3).From this passage we can infer that ______.(分数:1.00) A.we\"ll invite the craftsmen to teach at the college B.schools and books are not the only way to knowledge √ C.scientific discoveries are based on personal experience

D.discoveries and rediscoveries are the most important source of knowledge for a college student (4).The author advises the college students to ______.(分数:1.00) A.be contemptuous of the craftsman

B.be patient in helping the craftsman with scientific terms C.learn the craftsman\"s experience by judging it carefully √ D.gain the craftsman\"s experience without rejection

(5).The main idea of this passage is about ______.(分数:1.00)

A.what to learn from the parents B.how to gain knowledge √ C.why to learn from craftsmen D.how to deal with experience
