1.拘留;扣押
When people such as the policedetain someone, they keep them in a place under their control.

e.g. The act allows police todetain a suspect for up to 48 hours...

e.g. He was arrested and detained for questioning.

2.阻留;耽搁
Todetain someone means to delay them, for example by talking to them.

2. detain是及物动词,接名词或代词作宾语,偶尔也可接以动词不定式充当补足语的复合宾语。可用于被动结构。
